FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT VEGAN DOG FOOD

Our veterinarians will give you answers to all questions about vegan dog nutrition. We will clear up prejudices and give you a brief overview of what dogs need in their diet and how it is possible to feed them a purely plant-based diet. Feel free to contact us by email at tierarzt@vegdog.de if you have specific questions.

Is a vegan dog diet possible?

Yes, that is actually possible. However, as with any type of feeding, you have to make sure that the dog is provided with everything it needs. For this reason, VEGDOG's vegan dog food is supplemented with the necessary minerals, trace elements and vitamins that cannot be completely covered by the ingredients used. This is necessary for any complete food (whether with or without meat) to ensure optimal nutrition. To ensure that our vegan wet food can be fed as a complete food, we have our varieties nutrient analyzed.

When is VEGDOG particularly suitable?

FOOD ALLERGY
VEGDOG was developed because Tessa's dog Nelson suffered from a food allergy. Nelson was highly allergic (neurodermatitis, ear infection and gastrointestinal problems) to animal protein and grains. For this reason, we have worked with specialist veterinarians for dietetics to develop recipes that completely cover the dog's needs and, from a scientific point of view (according to this study) , do not contain any of the dog's main allergens. Only our ADULT No1 and SENIOR No1 varieties contain potatoes, among other things, to which some dogs are allergic. For these, the SENSIBELCHEN No1 varieties or our GREEN CRUNCH dry food are very suitable.

LEISHMANIASIS
Dogs suffering from leishmaniasis can also benefit from a purely plant-based diet. You can find out more about this in our blog post “Low-purine diet for leishmaniasis” .

HEALTHY VARIETY
But VEGDOG can also be a healthy alternative for all healthy dogs. With just one or two vegan days a week, not only is our dog's health helped, it also brings variety to the food bowl and makes a very valuable contribution to animal and environmental protection.

Can I feed VEGDOG in combination with other types of food?

Basically, of course, YES. However, if you use a mixed diet, we recommend having your ration checked by a specialist. The nutrients we have described and analyzed can only be provided if you feed your dog VEGDOG alone. If you switch between different types of food or different manufacturers, a nutritionist should check your rations and calculate the optimal supply.

Doesn't my dog need animal protein?

There is plant protein that is comparable to animal protein and can be used just as well by dogs. For this reason, you should always look for a high-quality protein source when choosing vegan dog food

Where does my dog get his amino acids?

What is important for a plant-based protein source is an amino acid profile that is optimal for dogs. Lupine is currently the highest quality protein source among plant-based feeds and ensures the basic supply of essential amino acids in vegan dog food.

What is contained in VEGDOG vegan wet food?

We initially use lupine granules and peas as protein sources. We also use starchy feeds as energy sources, such as potatoes. VEGDOG also contains vegetables, pulses, high-quality oil, sunflower seeds, algae and the appropriate supplements of minerals, trace elements and vitamins that would not be adequately covered by the natural contents of the ingredients. This is always necessary for a complete food, regardless of whether it contains meat or not. However, vegan food requires a few more.

How should the food change to VEGDOG be carried out?

The change should be made carefully over a period of three weeks. Gradually increase the amount of VEGDOG and reduce the amount of food previously fed. Weigh your dog at regular intervals and monitor its general condition.
