Hypoallergenic Dog Food: What You Need to Know
There is a lot to consider when feeding our furry friends - especially if your pet suffers from a food allergy. If your four-legged friend is allergic to certain food ingredients, hypoallergenic dog food can be the solution. We will tell you what this means and how the food can help your dog below. You will also learn more about food allergies and how you can recognize them.
What is a food allergy?
In the case of a food allergy, your dog's immune system reacts to certain components of the food, which are known as allergens. These allergens are perceived by the body as threatening substances, which is why they are fought with the body's own antibodies. This is basically an overreaction of the immune system.
Both the allergens and the reaction to them vary from dog to dog. However, the following symptoms are common in a food allergy:
- itching
- Excessive licking and nibbling
- coat and skin problems
- ear infections
- gastrointestinal complaints such as diarrhea and vomiting
Since these signs are very unspecific and can also occur with many other diseases, you should urgently consult a veterinarian to rule them out.
Animal proteins: The main allergens of dogs
Food allergies arise from repeated contact with the allergenic substance. It can happen that your four-legged friend seems to tolerate his food well over a long period of time and suddenly shows allergic reactions. Basically, almost any food component can trigger an allergy. However, since your dog only reacts sensitively when it repeatedly ingests the allergen, it is not surprising that frequently fed foods trigger the allergy.
According to a study published in 2016, the main allergens in dogs are animal proteins. 34% of the dogs tested showed an allergic reaction to beef, 15% to chicken and 14.5% to lamb. In addition, some four-legged friends reacted to gluten-containing grains such as wheat (13%), as well as to dairy products (17%). A good hypoallergenic dog food should therefore avoid these food components.
What to do if your dog has a food allergy?
If your furry friend suffers from a food allergy, there are various solutions. One option is to do an exclusion diet. This involves feeding your four-legged friend food with only one source of protein and carbohydrates for six to ten weeks. To rule out an allergy, exotic meats such as goat, horse, ostrich, kangaroo or reindeer are used. If the allergy symptoms improve, you can gradually add other food components.
An alternative to an exclusion diet is hypoallergenic food - that is, special dog food for dogs with allergies. However, you should take a look at the ingredients and make sure that the food does not contain the food component that triggers the allergy. After all, not every hypoallergenic dog food is suitable for every four-legged friend.
